Capital Gains Tax Calculator
Work out short and long-term capital gains tax on shares, mutual funds, property and gold under the post-2024 rules.
- How much long-term capital gains tax do I pay on shares?
- Long-term gains on listed shares and equity mutual funds held over twelve months are taxed at 12.5% under section 112A, and the first ₹1,25,000 of such gains in a financial year is exempt. Indexation is not available on equity.
- Can I still claim indexation when selling property?
- Indexation was withdrawn for transfers on or after 23 July 2024. Resident individuals and HUFs selling land or a building acquired before that date may choose between 12.5% without indexation and 20% with indexation, whichever gives the lower tax.
- What happens if I make a capital loss?
- A long-term loss can be set off only against long-term gains. A short-term loss can be set off against either. Unabsorbed losses carry forward for eight assessment years, but only if you file your return by the due date.
